Experience Goods Though it is not always possible, most consumers prefer to evaluate a product before buying it to be sure that it is worth their money. A product that consumers must purchase and use—in other words, a product that they must have experience with—before being able to evaluate it is called an experience good. Consumers are reluctant to purchase experience goods for the first time, since they are unsure of their value and quality. As such, producers of experience goods often give away limited amounts of their product for free, allowing customers to evaluate their product without investing any money in it.
